Thifting Adventure I | July 2012

Shoutout to my boy Quinnton, who has officially launched his new fashion blog, Jamel.

Over the past year or so, I’ve grown pretty fond of thrifting. Thrifting, or what I often refer to as “treasure hunting” takes me to the Goodwills, Salvation Armies, and Buffalo Exchanges of the world to look for vintage items and unique fabric patterns. I am a lover of vintage-inspired looks, especially older American luxury items and imports. I also look for design inspiration.

No offense to the major fashion chains I adore like Zara, H&M, and Banana Republic, but I get frustrated seeing the masses flock to what is trendy and generic style. Early in my fashion discovery, I’ll never forget someone commented once on my outfit, saying “It looks like you shop at H&M”. Since then I’ve been even more caution to ensure that every item in my closet is unique and adds to the Jamel aesthetic. I detest wearing what everyone is wearing. Detest it. Thrifting serves as one cure for this, and lately I have been winning big with some great finds.

A couple of weeks ago, me and my partner Ariel Belgrave took an impromptu trip to the Goodwill in Somerville, MA. We spent over an hour fully immersed in aisles of this two-story hipster play-place. It takes patience, strategy and a little creativity to search for that next great look. And although it may be helpful to search with a particular items in mind, the clothing is so cheap that one can afford to take some risks outside of the normal wardrobe picks.

My finds were mostly for this upcoming fall, my favorite season of the year.

Not bad right? Next stop, Bobby from Boston. From what I hear, it is the best vintage clothing shop in New England and its well known to supply historic films with authentic vintage costumes. Anyone have any other cool recommendations? Until next time…
